Committee chair in Canada says Sunwing, Via Rail must explain themselves

MP Peter Schiefke has announced plans to convene a committee meeting and has stated that Canada deserves answers for the delays and cancellations that occurred. Sunwing faced criticism after cancelling flights and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in Mexico, while Via Rail faced similar criticism after passengers were stranded for hours due to a winter storm in Ontario and Quebec.

Many trains scheduled to run on Christmas Eve were also cancelled, and the company cited a CN Rail derailment as the cause for further cancellations on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

A spokesperson for Via Rail has stated that they will respond positively to a committee request to explain the situation.

The transport industry in Canada has faced a number of issues, including staffing shortages and backlogs at passport offices, due to the return of domestic and international travel following COVID-19 restrictions.
