Discriminatory blood ban by Canadian Blood Services to end

Years in the making, a policy change to those permitted to donate blood is finally here, the Canadian blood services ban is planned to end.

On Thursday, Health Canada approved Canadian Blood Services’ submission to eliminate the three-month donor deferral period for gay and bisexual men.

The national blood donor organization will screen all donors based on higher risk sexual behaviours, regardless of gender or sexuality, rather than continuing to instate a blanket ban.

A member of the LGBTQ who filed a human rights complaint against Health Canada to remove this deferment, says the policy still denounces gay, bisexual men, and some transgender people.

He wants to be excited about the news and thinks that this is in some way historic in that we are seeing the end of the deferral he said in an interview with CBC News.

He also noted there are no questions about vaginal sex in the questionnaire, even though it is one of the primary modes of HIV infection which further promotes the narrative against the LGBTQs

They won’t be screening for vaginal sex, they won’t be screening for condom use or any other risk behaviour that they should be screening for.

What they’re saying is that gay and bi men and transgender [people]… are engaging primarily in anal sex. They’re stigmatizing us through this new policy. That’s what they’re saying with this new policy he also noted.

Canada’s prime minister addressed the coming policy change in a press conference on Thursday afternoon, accompanied by some LGBTQ+ members of his caucus as well as Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.

“Our government welcomes this decision. It’s been a long time coming,” Trudeau said, adding that he agrees with many who feel the change “took too long,” and should have been made a decade ago.

Canadian Blood Services says it plans to introduce the new behaviour-based questionnaire approach “no later” than Sept. 30th and will apply to both blood and plasma donations.
