Rhonda Head, a classical singer from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation and Winnipeg, was in Hollywood over the weekend for the 2023 Grammy Awards, where she brought a symphony of hometown pride to the biggest night in music. Head is a mezzo-soprano vocalist who has made a name for herself as a classical and jazz singer. She has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and has released albums of both standard opera and Cree hymns. Her talent has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades.
Head attended the Grammys for the third time, and she sees it as an opportunity to connect with others in the music industry and to represent her province and her Indigenous heritage on a global stage.
At the 2022 Grammy red carpet, she posed for photos with an Every Child Matters flag, paying homage to Indigenous children who were taken from their homes to attend residential schools.
This year, Head wanted to “do something fun” at the Grammy Awards. After she stumbled upon a Winnipeg Jets flag during a shopping trip, she knew it would be the perfect accessory to wear with her floor-length black dress, vibrant Indigenous-Canadian designed statement earrings, and red pumps. She is a huge fan of the Winnipeg Jets and tries to attend a game whenever she visits the city.
The Grammys were full of incredible moments for Head, with Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ performance and Grammy win being a high point. After the ceremony, she rubbed shoulders with rock royalty at the after party, including Robert Trujillo, the bass player from Metallica, and Flo Rida and his band, who provided the entertainment. Being in a room with other artists and musicians was a great experience for Head, and she felt inspired by the energy in the room.
