Lifetime announces movie of infamous murder of Gabby Petito

The heartbreaking disappearance and tragic murder of Gabby Petito will be covered in a new Lifetime movie.

Petito’s body was found Sept. 19, 2021 at a campground near Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming. A coroner determined she’d died about three weeks earlier of “blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation.

The rising social media star was on a cross-country van trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, when she disappeared in late August. Laundrie became the first suspect in the investigation.

The Lifetime movie is tentatively titled The Gabby Petito Story and will mark the directorial debut of Thora Birch. Birch will also play Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, in the film.

Gabby’s story is just one of many as a larger public affairs initiative by the Lifetime network to Stop Violence Against Women. “As a trusted destination for women, Lifetime will create a new PSA to debut as part of the movie’s roll out, driving to the important work of the network’s coalition of partners to provide resources for women,” the network said.

Lifetime promised they are “also in development on several movies surrounding violence against women who may not have had the same media attention as Gabby Petito”.

The film will be written by Gregory Small and Richard Blaney, who previously wrote the Lifetime film “Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret” and worked on the series “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.”

Other casting will be announced later.

The network, well known for its movies about women in danger, said it is developing several projects about violence against women whose cases did not receive the same media attention.

Production on the film is set to begin in Utah this summer with a premiere set for later this year.
