Man dies after Winnipeg police shoot him during traffic stop

Winnipeg police say an officer shot their gun during a traffic stop near Portage Avenue. The driver of the vehicle they stopped was hit and later died from his injuries.

Officers were operating a traffic stop on Portage Avenue on Saturday evening, a Sunday news release said.

One officer shot his gun during the incident, and police say the driver was struck.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, police say, where he died from his injuries.

The man’s identity was not released.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and is investigating the matter, police say.
