The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the six-storey building on Qu’Appelle Avenue after 4 a.m. on Christmas day and saw smoke and flames.

Six people were sent to hospital – three were in critical condition.

Winnipeg Police could not confirm if the two people who died were among those transported to the hospital. Kin must be notified before any information is revealed.

The city reported four more fires during the evening of Dec. 24 and early morning of Dec. 25. These fires didn’t result in any deaths.

Police say they arrested a suspect after the fire but they were released without charges.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Winnipeg Transit deployed buses to the scene on Sunday to provide shelter for evacuees, and an emergency social services team was deployed to assist 42 displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
